My Process for Editing

1. You send a query through the contact form below. Include:

A brief description of the project.
Is it for general publication or just friends & family or a particular audience?
How long is it?
Do you know how you want to publish?

2. Through emails, we'll clarify what services you'll need.

I provide free instruction sheets and links to information as needed. If you're self-publishing, you'll decide how you want the book to look and I'll edit in the appropriate format.

3. When you believe your manuscript is ready for editing, you send it to me.

4. I start with a global review for $300 up to 75,000 words. This includes:

Notes on structure, content, and presentation. Have you achieved clarity and consistency? Does the story work? What might make it better? Is it suitable for the intended audience? You'll get overall comments and suggestions for revision.
Sample Edit on a typical section of writing. On this sample, I do a close comprehensive read that includes copy edits (aka line or mechanical edits) as well as specific comments.
Credit: If you decide to have me do the full edit, you'll get a $150 credit.

5. If I've recommended extensive revisions, do those first, then submit the revised manuscript.

6. I'll use the sample edit and word count in the manuscript (or revised manuscript) to estimate the time needed and develop a flat rate for a close combination comprehensive/copy edit of the project. Your credit will be applied. I'll send you a contract.

7. Once the contract is signed, the full manuscript receives a close combination comprehensive/copy edit with comments.

8. Revisions - Based on the comments, you may decide to make revisions. If they are extensive, I recommend a second edit either by myself or another editor.

9. Proofing: This is the final level of edit on a polished manuscript, usually in the publishing format, checking primarily for typos and consistency in format. This should be done by a fresh set of eyes - someone who hasn't been working with the manuscript.

I do proofing on books that have been edited by others.

I proofread for .02/word.

Coaching/Design

As a Book Coach for those who choose to self-publish, I guide authors through manuscript preparation and the publication process. This includes any or all of the following:

Editing as needed.
Formatting interior for publication per industry standards (print and/or eBook formats).
Free worksheets offering guidance and instructions (with screenshots) to help you through each step in the self-publication process, including ISBN and copyright instructions.
Additional help in following those instructions or other related work.
Assistance with cover design to specifications for print and eBooks.
Image preparation and insertion. (Images need to be high resolution and different modes for print and eBooks.)

I help you set up your own publishing account, so you get all royalties and have control over any changes in the future. My hourly rate for these services is negotiable.
