Why I write fiction:

I prefer fiction to memoir because:

¨ The focus is on telling a good story. Real life is sloppy.

¨ I can’t imagine filling in the middle if I already knew the complete ending. Working with a general idea lets the story flow in its own direction.

¨ Fictional characters start from bits and pieces of several people, and then develop a life of their own, so no one should be offended.

¨ The characters’ voices take over and thousands of words pour out in a day.

¨ The material can be used so many ways in so many works of fiction.

Fiction is fun.
